How Cupping Can Help You Overcome Pain and Injury

Cupping

If you watched the 2016 Olympics, there was a lot of talk around Michael Phelps and the dark-colored spots on his body. What are they? What do they do? Does it help? Since then, cupping has become a widely used practice to help date an injury and relieve tension. The spots it leaves on your body can be disconcerting, but they actually tell a story. I have started using this practice more frequently in the office and have seen remarkable results for many including everyone from athletes to those who sit at a desk for 50+ hours a week.

What to Expect at the Chiropractor

Doctor holding patient's shoulder and wrist
You may be surprised to find out that chiropractic care has been available for almost 100 years, as it became one of the largest alternative healing professions in the U.S. in the 1930s. It has grown and evolved over time, introducing new techniques, and gaining more traction over time. However, we find that many people have reservations because th...

Icing for Injuries: Is it Effective?

Ice bag on knee injury

Have you or a family member ever been injured and been told to ice the injured area on and off for several days? This is extremely popular advice, but few stop to think of the validity of it. Dr. Gabe Mirkin coined RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) in the 1970s, but has since found that this method may not be the most beneficial after all. Of course, the type and extent of the injury will affect the treatment plan, but as a general rule, RICE is no longer the way to go. Instead, other methods have been found to be more beneficial.

Baseball Injury Prevention: How to Stay on the Field

Player avoiding baseball injury

Baseball is a year-round sport, especially in the area that we live. The benefit of an off-season is not only for rest and recovery but to balance asymmetries and to work on weaknesses in your game. If you pay attention to professional sports, you will realize that pro-athletes do not have an "off-season," but rather a period of time where they aren't competing. After winning his 7th Super Bowl, Tom Brady was spotted on the field throwing passes one week after the big game – proof that you're never truly "off the clock" as an athlete. So, the real question is, why are baseball players so susceptible to elbow injuries? When a high school baseball player is sitting on my table, the last thing a parent wants to hear come out of my mouth is the dreaded phrase "Tommy John."

Can Chiropractic Care Help Sinus Infections?

Sinus infection

Did you know that your immune system can be boosted by 200% from regular chiropractic care? Additionally, patients under chiropractic care fight off infection more effectively and have decreased time away from work as opposed to those that don't participate in regular adjustments. Your sinuses can cause issues year-round, whether it be seasonal/allergy-related, a sinus infection, or dry air in the winter. Each case of sinus pressure or infection is incredibly frustrating but can be treated with a chiropractic sinus adjustment.

New Year, New Habits: Chiropractic Tips for Healthy Movement

How to Stand

New beginnings have a way of inspiring change. Many people make plans to start their new practice the next day, next week, next month, or sometimes the next year. It's the idea of a clean slate, a new opportunity to start fresh and put past shortcomings behind you that makes this behavior so common. With 2021 upon us, we hope you use this year to dedicate yourself to health and wellness. Part of that journey is investing time into keeping your body strong for as long as possible. Your body doesn't turn 30 years old one day and decide it's time for low back pain and neck stiffness every morning. It's more often than not a product of how you move, sit, and sleep.

Woodstock Chiropractor treats sprained ankle
While there are certainly ways to strengthen your body to prevent injuries, not everything is avoidable. 5 Benefits of Preventive Chiropractic Care

Patient learning about joint movement from doctor

Do you change the oil in your car when your engine dies? Or do you routinely change the oil in your car to keep it in good condition for as long as possible? Hopefully, you chose the latter. Our bodies are very similar to cars in that there are a great many things we can do to stay in commission. Many patients come in after an injury or when they're experiencing extreme pain, and while chiropractic care is certainly needed at those times, I feel it's equally as important to invest in preventive chiropractic care. When potential issues are identified and addressed early on, chiropractic care can actually prevent frequent injury and pain in many cases. It's more than just performing a few techniques to correct your alignment. At Strack Chiropractic Wellness Center, I teach you how to move your body in a way that will strengthen your spine and allow for healthy movement. Much like any other health venture, it's not a one and done situation. It takes consistency and a commitment to change your movement habits. Here are five reasons preventive chiropractic care is the best option.

Active Release: Questions You Didn't Know to Ask

Active Release: Questions You Didn't Know to Ask

We find that people are always looking for ways to improve their quality of life, and chiropractic is a great way to do that. The good thing is that it isn’t just for injuries, it’s for anyone who wants to stay aligned and keep their body moving the way they need it to. One way to accomplish this is through the Active Release Technique (ART). Believe it or not, chiropractors can learn a lot about your body through ART as they can identify the approximate age of an injury and any points of tension. This technique can reduce pain, relieve headaches, and increase flexibility and range of motion.

Why You Shouldn’t Self-Diagnose Plantar Fasciitis

Why You Shouldn’t Self-Diagnose Plantar Fasciitis
The internet can be an excellent resource for a great many things, but over the years, it has become an unwelcomed replacement for doctors, specialists, chiropractors, and other medical professionals. Though the internet can provide valuable information, it’s best to go see a professional who can help accurately diagnose and treat injuries. One of the most patient-misdiagnosed problems we see in the office is plantar fasciitis.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

The female body undergoes a long list of changes throughout pregnancy. Though some changes are noticeable (weight gain and expanding belly), others are only noticeable to the mother herself. One symptom that the majority of pregnant women will experience is back pain. This back pain can be intermittent or extend throughout the entire pregnancy. Every body is different so each experience differs. Due to the constant changes occurring, there are two main causes of this back pain: hormones and postural distortion.

Referred Pain: How Jumper’s Knee Originated from the Lumbar Spine

Referred Pain: How Jumper’s Knee Originated from the Lumbar Spine
Have you ever heard of the Skeleton Dance? We’re sure you have! It goes something like this: “The thigh bone's connected to the leg bone. The leg bone's connected to the knee bone. The knee bone's connected to the neck bone.” Sound familiar? It’s a classic kid’s song, but it demonstrates the intricacies of the human body. Everything is connected – even if it doesn’t feel like it. This rang true for Bradley, a 16-year old high school basketball player, and patient at Strack Chiropractic Wellness Center.

Shoulder Injuries in the Throwing Athlete

Shoulder Injuries in the Throwing Athlete
One of the biggest problems that inhibits baseball players from throwing every day is anterior shoulder pain, or pain that is in the front of the shoulder. This pain frequently gets pushed off as it isn’t considered to be “bad enough” to see a doctor. However, delaying medical attention doesn’t halt the progression of this injury. Let's review some of the symptoms of anterior shoulder pain and why baseball players experience this shoulder injury so often.
